Thesis: In a society where sex sells everything from food to cars, we should not be surprised by hearing that pregnancy seems to be the new trend for teenagers


1. Popularity changes
a. sexual content on tv has doubled
- teen pregnancy rates are on the rise
- diluting teens' morals and common sense

b. wrong idea- teen sex without consequences
- Bristol Palin and Jamie Lynn Spears
- Teen Media Project--kids who are exposed to a heavy amount of sexual media are more than twice more likely to become sexually active by the age of sixteen than kids that are exposed to a minimal amount of sexual media.

2. Glamorization of teen sex and teen pregnancy
a. two thirds of all television shows include sexual content
- Sixteen and Pregnant, Knocked Up, Juno
- messages being sent by these shows are the opposite of reality

b. downplaying effects of pregnancy
- Pregnancy isn't cute, and it's definitely not easy.
- Why can't we show the truth? Is it fair to show false situations?

3. Who/what's to blame?
a. schools are failing in educating students about sex and consequences
- effective sex education programs can decrease sexual activity and increase contraceptive use among those already sexually active
- sex education should be incorporated as early as possible for students

b. What makes a sex ed class "effective?"
- teen sex is not unrealistic
- students should be aware of any/all available contraceptives
- students should be taught how sex/pregnancy will affect their futures
